CERN- Is The Money Justified?

By: cd mohatta

Though this article begins with the headline mentioning CERN, it applies to all research that costs lot of money but may give no results as far as our living condition is concerned on the earth. The Hadron experiment came into focus for many reasons-

1. The cost involved
2. The many countries that are collaborating
3. The precision experiment
4. The scale of equipment
5. The very high cost
6. The fear of black holes production
7. The media exposure

Since ages experiments have been conducted to unravel the mysteries of the universe. But none has cost so much. The scientists’ expect to know more about-

1. The origin of the universe
2. More subatomic particles
3. Higgins Boson
4. Other findings.

How will this help us all who share the earth? How many are as such worried or bothered about what happened during the origin of the universe? Most of the nations are facing problems of hunger and sickness. Are the people there at all bothered about these experiments and the results? The developed countries are fighting the menace of-

1. Global warming
2. Terrorism
3. Economic slowdown

Which candidate has made this research an issue in the elections for 2008? None of them have done so because they know that this just does not matter to the electorate. What matters to the common person is the cost of living, jobs, education, taxes and health care. Along with that the major threat of terrorism and loss of lives in fighting that. Why are we then applauding this experiment? The money could have been better spent in fighting global warming, AIDS, generating employment and fighting terrorism.

It is tragic that large amount is spent on fancy experiments but people in many African countries are dying of hunger. They are more worried about food and medicines.
