Court Etiquette

By: moniquewillington

The courthouse can be considered a whole new different world. You are required to follow certain rules once inside the premises. Before entering, you must submit yourself to a security search. Do not bring any form of weapons such as pocketknives, guns, etc. with you.

Laws of the Courtroom:

• Food and drinks are NOT allowed inside courtrooms

• No chewing of gums inside the courtrooms. Kids are not encouraged inside as they could be sources of distraction.

• No reading of any kind of book or literature except for legal documents related to a case.

• There is a dress code. Although you don't have to wear a suit, you are advised to dress appropriately.

• Cell phones should be in silent modes at all times.

• Court staff are not qualified to make legal advice

• Everyone should stand when a judge enters or leaves a room.

• Court documents are not allowed to leave the premises

Different cases are handled by different kinds of courts:

• DISTRICT COURTS – for misdemeanors, first appearance cases, evictions, restraining orders, juvenile cases and search warrants

• SUPERIOR COURTS – for lawsuits involving finances, equity cases, divorce and custody cases and felonies

• PROBATE COURTS – for cases involving estates, committal, guardianships and adoptions

• U.S. DISTRICT COURT – cases involving federal laws and agencies

• SUPREME COURT – appeals from lower courts

• BANKRUPTCY COURTS
