Starting Your Autobiography

By: Robert Brady

Plenty of good resources exist on the web to help you write your autobiography. Part of the fun of recording your autobiography is figuring out the way that best fits your lifestyle, your life, your time, and your personality.

Try any of these items to start the process:

1. Tape record your autobiography

2. Organize your photo albums

3. Keep track of your day in a journal or diary.

4. Find a free program online that will allow you to answer easy questions about your life.

5. Writing letters to family and friends to collect stories.

6. Fill out a pedigree chart or family tree.

Tell Your Story in Your Way

Find your voice. People who know you should find you in the pages of your autobiography. They should find a stranger. Although it's uncomfortable sometimes, it's best to tell your story honestly. People will respect and appreciate your honesty.

The Easiest Way to Get Started

How? Writing Lists.

That's right making lists: memory lists, people lists, event lists, etc. This has got to be the simplest and least intimidating way to get started. As you start to make lists, you will notice that the ideas for what to write will come to your mind very quickly.

Your autobiography will come together as you in ways you couldn't imagine as you build and expand lists.

Sample Autobiographies And as far as an example of an autobiography...there are tons of these too. If you visit Wikipedia (a great online resource, by the way) you will find an over abundance of sample autobiographies for you to look at.

Take It Slowly

Sometimes we think that we should be able to summarize our lives in quick half hour session. Once you know how to start an autobiography, you should allow your autobiography to develop over time. By slowing down, you'll accomplish a number of things, including:

You'll remember more stories.

You'll give others time to contribute.

Life lessons will unravel for you to see.

You'll find your true voice.

I'm sure you will find that as you start, you will find you can't stop. It's fun and rewarding to write your own story.

It's there for you. You get it.
