Two Disturbing Truths About Public Water That Make a Home Water Filtration System a No-Brainer

By: Rich Eng

What is the purpose of a home water filter system? Considering the fact that the majority of us are connected to a public treatment facility in some way, what reason do we have to worry? Continue reading.

There is only so much that a public water filtration system can do. They safeguard people from illnesses such as typhoid. They remove mud, dirt, raw sewage and other more offensive things like dead animals that fall into reservoirs and lakes. This process filters out dangerous heavy metals, foreign objects like rocks and silt, and many minerals. The water is tested to ensure there are no toxic contaminants. But, there are problems with the public water filtration system that can only be solved by a "point of use" or "in the home" unit.

First, most of them use chemicals to kill bacteria and to provide disinfection. Chlorine tends to be the most frequent, but others can be utilized as well. The chemical disinfection process releases by-products that are hazardous to a person's health. Chlorine produces by-products called THMs. These chemicals are known to lead to cancer. That means they cause cancer.

The regulations put in place by the Environmental Protection Agency require that the THM content or total trihalomethanes be restricted to 80 parts per billion. THMs are poisonous and could cause health problems, and even nerve damage once they reach or exceed a certain level. You see, the public water filtration system cannot remove the by-products. They can only test the water to see if their level is too high.

That raises another issue. Although public officials and government entities do their best to put safeguards in place, problems can often slip through the cracks and reach the consumer. You might be thinking, "okay, so since they test before send it out, then we're safe without a home water filtration system, right?"

There are many factors that are not considered by the so-called "safe" level. If your weight is less the 175 pounds, there is a threat of greater toxic levels.

Toxic levels are greater in individuals who weigh less than 175 pounds.
Two, while most facilities are surely doing their job correctly, there have been reports of inaccurately reporting the test results in order to pass. Third, the test may underestimate the levels of by-products in your tap water because the water may pick up additional impurities before it enters your home plumbing system.

Does this frighten you? Anyone can benefit from a point of use water filtration system and for those households with children, it is especially valuable because it removes chlorine and blocks THMs. You must shop carefully because some products only block chlorine and odor, even though they are described as purifiers. Given this set of circumstances, no protection against THMs would be available.

You should always request certifications and ask about other industry standards when searching for a water filtration system. Certifications are not mandatory, but the better companies have them done. An information printout listing THMs and other polluting materials, including VOCs and cysts, should be available. Although the names may not be familiar to you, pestisides and herbisides should also be listed. Benzene and lindane are the most common in the United States. A system that removes all kinds of impurities is the kind that will be the best bargain. There are only a few that do the whole job.

Hopefully, this article has described how water filtration systems operate and why every home needs one. Have fun selecting a product!
